What we’re looking for

Poems, short fiction and essays. We like writing that is specific and unhurried, and that sounds like a person wrote it. There’s no required theme and no house style.

We publish work written by people. Please don’t send writing generated by AI.

How much to send

• Poems: up to five, in one document.
• Fiction and essays: one piece, up to 4,000 words.

Please send only work that hasn’t been published before, in print or online, including on your own website.

How to send it

Email your work to the submissions address, which will be posted here soon.

• Put the form and title in the subject line, like Poetry: The Orchard or Fiction: Late Trains.
• Attach your work as a Rich Text (.rtf), Word (.docx) or PDF file. A file saved from Longhand is perfect.
• In the email, include two or three sentences about yourself, written in the third person. We’ll print it with your work.

Sending the same piece to other journals at the same time is fine. If it’s accepted somewhere else, just let us know.

What happens next

We read every submission ourselves, and we reply to every one. Please give us a few weeks after the deadline.

If we publish your work, we ask for first online publication rights. All rights return to you when it’s published. If it appears somewhere later, we’d be glad of a mention.

We can’t pay contributors yet. We hope to change that.
